Fritz Baumann – Oak Bench #342

Each of Fritz Baumann's stools is unique. Hand-carved from freshly felled oak, each piece follows the unique grain and character of the tree.

Using a chainsaw, Baumann shapes the green wood directly from the trunk, leaving visible tool marks that become a part of the design. After carving, the stools undergo a slow drying process during which the wood naturally settles, develops cracks and reveals its final form. Cracks are stabilized with traditional butterfly joints, while finishes such as iron water, lime wash or the charring of the oak accentuate the grain and the tree's growth rings.
